Reforming Lives of Artisans in Kamrup

Silk and fabric weaving has been a source of livelihood for many artisans in the Kamrup region of India. Artisans here also use a unique method of silk production called Ahimsa Silk (or non-violent silk). While expensive to produce, this tradition is more humane and is a tradition worth preserving. But these artisans live in abject poverty. Most of the artisans are women and they often have no money to buy raw material and the looms they use are very old and create productivity and health issues.

Preserve Culture organization has partnered with Tata Trust’s Antaran project and together we are trying to solve the structural issues facing the artisans in the Kamrup region. We believe that a systematic intervention can help create an enabled community that learns modern methods to fuse with historically evolved craft knowledge.

Please help us in this initiative by contributing a small amount that will benefit these artisans to keep this tradition alive.
